12.06.09 DEVELOPMENT FIRM BUYS POPINJAY

A popular hotel in Lanarkshire has been sold by administrators Campbell Dallas to a development company whose directors include Glasgow Rangers and Scotland midfielder Barry Ferguson.

Jones Lang LaSalle orchestrated the deal to buy the Popinjay Hotel in Carluke on behalf of Clyde Valley Developments for an undisclosed seven figures sum. Christie & Co acted for the sellers.

The 34 bedroom hotel, which dates back to 1882, incorporates a restaurant, bar, function suite, leisure club and swimming pool. Clyde Valley developments intends to keep the business as a hotel and leisure club.

Akram Mohammed of Clyde Valley Developments Ltd said: "The Popinjay Hotel is a well established property in Carluke which we are keen to develop and give a new lease of life by implementing a phased refurbishment."

Joint administrator Derek Forsyth of Campbell Dallas said: "There was significant interest in the hotel with six formal offers being received, confirming the hotel's highly regarded status".

The Clyde Valley Development Ltd, established in 2004, is run by a number of shareholders including Ferguson, Mohammed, Colin McWhinnie, Davie Russell and Asam Sarwar. The development company owns a number of properties in Lanarkshire and plans to expand its property portfolio in the area over the coming years.
